He stands alone by the highway,
With his hand up in the air;
The lonely road is deserted in the rain,
So he won't be going anywhere.

He started out in Rainy River,
When he was a younger man;
Life changed fast and now he's living on the road,
Hitchhiking back and forth across the land.

And I wonder how many years he's lost
In the cigarette smoke and the car exhaust every day;
And I'm thinking about his lonely nights
And the feeling he gets in the lantern light that I could never understand.

Life is hard for an old hitchhiker--life is hard,
But it goes on every day;
He's made some friends, but he's left them all behind,
He keeps his baggage light along the way.

He might head down to the border;
He had some friends in Idaho--
If he can't find them there he'll keep on moving on,
Hitchhiking 'cause he's got nowhere to go.

He knows the names of all the truckers,
Knows their C.B. handles too;
"Rooster Red, can you help me find a bed,
I'm weary, and I don't know what to do."
